I went to Kansas City for Cross Nationals. I dinged up my knee a week earlier night riding my mountain bike with friends. Friends dust off my bike but leave me on the ground in pain. Cracked my helmet. Visit to the doctor in another week to see what is up with the knee as it still hurts. Anyway I did not have great hope at KC but I already paid and my friends were there. By the time the race was done I was placed at 25 but I was a lap down. Actually about 1.5 laps down as I heard an announcement for the guy finishing when I had about 5 minutes left. So I have tried to figure out where I really placed which is hard to do if you cannot find photographs for clues. I remember a guy at the start line that had some embrocation on his legs and red shorts. I started way back and finished there. I remember that guy passing me and offering encouraging words. I found one picture that suggests he passed me at the end of the race with about 4 minutes left on that lap. But he may have been lapping me. That would be Jim lap time as the really fast guys were doing laps about 1.5-2 minutes faster than me. Some guys seem to recall all kinds of details about their races. I was going about as hard as I could go. My throat was burned at the end. My legs were mushy on the stairs at the hotel that night. About all I remember is I ran the barriers better than expected, I passed someone who was not happy to be passed, I was passed at the end of my third lap and I drafted that guy for 20 seconds, and I got out of the way of a lot of fast racers. I sure would like to know how bad I really did. If they screwed my place up they probably screwed up a lot of placings. I swear two dozen guys did not pass me but it is possible.
I watched a number of friends races. They all seemed to be in pain. I was going as hard as I could but I sure had fun. I bet there is even a picture of me smiling someplace.
